CMM 301 - Communication Theory 3 credits Prerequisite(s): CMM 101 This course introduces students to the constructs and models that make up the body of knowledge known as communication theory. It investigates the relationship between humanistic, scientific, classical, and contemporary communication theories in keeping with the University's core value of personal development. The course demystifies communication theory and demonstrates the pervasiveness of the theory in their everyday lives. It is a very interdisciplinary course that is heavily influenced by Linguistics, Anthropology, English, Sociology, and Psychology. It includes the study of rhetoric, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and mass communication. Finally, the course provides an investigation of sending and receiving messages, the structure of messages, the cause and effect of messages, and the interpretation of verbal and nonverbal content. Offered fall semester.
