SWK 350 - Loss and Bereavement

3 credits

This elective course is designed for social work students who wish to increase their knowledge, skills, and understanding of issues surrounding loss, bereavement, dying, and death, and how to live to the fullest while addressing these challenges both personally and professionally with clients The course will utilize an interdisciplinary perspective and will look at the ethical, psychological, social, cultural, political, medical, legal, policy, and spiritual issues surrounding grief, dying, and death. We will address ways to develop an appreciation for the traditions, rituals, beliefs, terminology, and language used surrounding what is frequently considered a difficult topic. One of the primary goals of the course will be for social work students to become familiar with and gain confidence in skills to help clients who have suffered significant losses in their lives.
