BIO 259 - Introduction to Research - Phage Hunters II 3 credits This course is part of a national program called SEA-GENES (Science Education Alliance-Gene-function Exploration by a Network of Emerging Scientists), which is directed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute [HHMI]. This is a laboratory centered course, based on authentic research. In this course students will learn several important techniques involved in gene cloning and gene expression analysis. Phage genes are cloned and expressed, they are then assessed to identify interactions with the host bacteria proteins and hopefully, assign a potential function to the phage genes. This work will then be presented as part of the national SEA Symposium.
This is a lab-only class that meets for 4 hours weekly [2 x 2 hours] and is worth 3 credits. A lab fee will be applied. This class is offered in the Spring term only.
