SCI 101 - Integrated Physical Science 3 credits Prerequisite(s): MAT 003 or MAT 131 and/or be eligible for MAT 128 , MAT 141 , or higher This is the first of two required LINK interdisciplinary liberal arts science courses designed to provide the student with a fundamental and integrated understanding of the physical universe and natural world of which he or she is a part. Topics covered include the scientific way of knowing; the origin, history, structure, and fate of the universe; the nature of the elementary particles which make up matter; the four fundamental forces which shape the universe; energy; the laws of the universe; galaxies, stars, supernovas, black holes, and planets; the origin, structure, and fate of the solar system; the death of the sun; plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes; chemical reactions, bonding, and molecules; biogeochemical cycles, winds, tides and oceanic currents; El Ni±o; and global climate change. Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills and an understanding of how physical systems operate. Social and environmental justice themes are woven throughout the course.
