SPA 327 - Peoples of Al-Andalus: Their Influence and Legacy to the Spanish Culture

3 credits
Prerequisite(s): SPA 311  , SPA 312  , and SPA 320  or permission of the instructor.
Through a dynamic approach to teaching and learning, this course introduces students to the peoples of Al-Ándalus, their history, legacy, and influence in contemporary Spain. Specifically, it examines Al-Ándalus social and economic development, furthers students' critical thinking by providing different historical perspectives, explores its influence in multiple dimensions (e.i., language, culture, art, gastronomy) as well as grants opportunities to develop a skill set necessary to be safer, savvier travelers. Furthermore, students will use class readings and assignments to reflect about being responsible travelers and how they impact the peoples, cultures, places, and environment via tourism. This is a highly interactive course framed within the principles of professional and learned associations such as the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the Institute of International Education (IIE), and the Association of International Educators (NAFSA). This course will involve virtual and/or real-time field trips to Spain. This course is fully taught in Spanish
